1. Pick three and explain their function and role in a modern computer. Explain using examples from your work of the semester:
HARD DRIVE
This is where everything on your computer is stored and read off so the computer works. The operating system is stored on this and without an operating system the computer wouldn't know what to do when you turned it on. Also, when you save anything it is stored on the hard drive so if you didn't have one your computer wouldn't work. An example is when Mike and I didn't have an operating system the computer wouldn't work because it wasn't on the hard drive.
COOLING
Cooling covers a broad amount of things such as a regular fan in the back of a computer case to an
underwater computer that looks like a fish tank. The purpose of cooling is so that your computer
does not overheat and crash or cause poor performance. This is needed because when the computer is processing information or just on and idle is creats heat and the cooling systems well, cool the computer down so none of that bad stuff happens. We did a huge poster on this and I still have a page for it on my wiki.
OPERATING SYSTEM
The operating system is stored on the hard drive and is read when the computer startsand thru-out the time you have it on. The operating system basiclly tells a computer how to be a computer. It tell the motherboard to read the hard drive and the processer to process and pretty much everything a computer does that a person expects it to do is all because of the operating system. An example of this is again when I didn't have have an operating system our computer wouldn't work and was really annoying.
2. Discuss working within the class group to solve problems and gather information about your projects. How could you use this experience or recreate it to do work in the future?
Working in a big group helpped a lot because I don't know very much about computers and some people in here know everything so everytime i had a problem i could just go ask someone for help and I would know what to do in no time. Also, it made the class fun instead of boring and you always had to mind working on that one problem(maybe in my case 1 and a 1/2)but it always helpped to be able to talk the problem thru and find a soultion.
3. Describe the most significant challenge you overcame while working on computers this semester.
What did you do to overcome the challenge?
I think my most significant problem was probly getting an operating system because at that point we had the whole computer put together finnaly and then we turned it on and it wouldn't work. We tried a lot
of things on it and relized we needed an operating system. Now, it wasn't putting the operating system on the computer that was the hard part, it was getting the operating system that was the hard part. It took about 4 classes to get it and we had nothing to do because we didn't want to screw everything down and find out that something didn't work so that would be my hardest obsicul to overcome. To overcome this challege I had Mike go to his grandparents house and steal theit copy of windows 98. Not very nice but, it worked.
4. What was the most important thing you learned from this class? Explain.
The most imortant thing that i learned was probly how to build a computer. Because before i came to this class I didn't know a floppy drive from a hard drive. Also. Ilearned how to repair a computer so if my computer breaks screw haveing someone else do it Im going to do it now.
5. What do you wish you learned from this class?
I wish I learned linix and how all the different operating system worked. Also, I wish i learned a little bit more about how operating systems and hard drives work but maybe I'll learn hat on my own.
